Washington Square West is a neighborhood located in Center City or downtown Philadelphia. The real estate in the area is a blend of commercial, service industries, and residential which is generally characterized by rows of two, three, and four-story houses which are interspersed by condominiums and mid-rise apartment blocks.

Getting Around Washington Square West

Walking and cycling in Washington Square West are very popular pastimes and the neighborhood truly lends itself to these pursuits. Parking can be something of a problem due to the limited number of parking slots available. Public transportation in the area which includes trains, electric trolleys, buses, and subways services, all provided by The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), is copious.

If you’re a bit of a ghost fanatic then joining the Night Ghost Tour by Spirits of ’76 Philly is likely a suitable endeavor. The tour traverses through a variety of neighborhoods, including Washington Square West. There are over twenty stopping points along the way, however, this tour is certainly not for the faint-of-heart!
Washington Square Park offers its residents and visitors alike plenty to keep them active.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a popular destination. The Tomb represents the only memorial in the area which is dedicated to the memory of Revolutionary Soldiers. In 1954 the site witnessed the erection of a memorial honoring both General George Washington and an Unknown Soldier. The park is also home to Philadelphia’s only Moon Tree. Antique Row on Pine Street (between 9th and 11th Streets) is the place to go to if you enjoy hunting through vintage clothing stores, take pleasure from artwork made by local artists, and to find all sorts of collectibles and one-of-a-kind items.

Mixto at 1141 Pine Street caters to those who have a preference for Spanish, Cuban, and Latin American style of food. They are open from 9am to 12.30am seven days each week.

Mercato at 1216 Spruce Street serves up pub-style food, Italian, and modern American. The doors open from 5pm to 10pm Monday to Thursday, 5pm to 10.30pm Friday and Saturday, and 5pm to 9.30pm on Sundays.
