Getting Around Fishtown, Philadelphia

Fishtown is in fact one of the most easily traversed sections of Philadelphia. Southeastern Pennsylvania Transport Authority (SEPTA) provide subways, buses, and electric trolleys which service the various neighborhoods throughout the entire area. The City also boasts many of the most bicycle-friendly streets in Philadelphia, and affords no less than 25 miles of bike lanes.

Fishtown has several forms of Public Transit accessible from Subway and trolleys to Buses and Bike Lanes. The Girard subway stop and Berks subway stop service the fishtown area, and the trolley line which runs along Girard Ave connects Fishtown with the western parts of the City. 

For those with a preference for driving, Interstates 76 and 95 both converge by the Schuylkill River offering excellent access to the entire regional highway system.

Things to See and Do in Fishtown

Penn Treaty park is a historic park that marks the spot where William Penn signed his treaty with the Tamanend, the cheif of the Lenape people. It offers wonderful views of the Delaware River and the Ben Franklin Bridge. It is also located next to the PECO plant which is being considered as a Historic site itself. Ice cream trucks often frequent the park in the summer.

Palmer Cemetery is located in the heart of Fishtown and is one of Philadelphia's first free burial grounds. It holds remains of some of the original families of Fishtown and Kensington including the Cramp and Shibe families. It was originally called the Kensington Burial Grounds and was contributed to the city by Anthony Palmer, an imigrant from England who became one of the largest landowners in Northeast Philadelphia. It also holds remains of Veterans from every American war including the War of Independence in 1776.

Places to Eat in Fishtown

A favorite among Fishtown Locals, Loco Pez at the intersections of Norris St, Cedar St, and Susquehanna Ave is a Fishtown institution/Dive Bar serving up authentic Mexican cuisine and great atmosphere.

Philly Style Bagels at Palmer Park bakes up some of the best Beer-Batter Bagels in the whole city! Be sure to get there early as they often close before their 2pm closing time when they run out of bagels! 

Ekta at 250 E Girard Ave has a reputation of being the best & most authentic Indian Food in Philadelphia. Serving authentic punjabi cuisine, they offer dining and take out.

Kensington Quarters, located at 1310 Frankford Ave, specializes in Farm-to-table meats and vegetables. It also offers its specialized meats for sale as a butcher also. Kensington Quarters has become a Fishtown Institution in the last few years.
