Situated in the Southwest Center City Philadelphia neighborhood, the site where Graduate Hospital now stands was first used for medical care in 1889, though there was no hospital until 1916 when it was named Philadelphia Polyclinic. The establishment is located within the area of 20th Street and South Street.

Graduate Hospital, also referred to as ‘G-Ho’, now operates as two specialty medical facilities run by UPHS – Penn Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine, an inpatient rehabilitation center, and Good Shepherd Specialty Hospital, a long-term acute care hospital.

The main neighborhood thoroughfare is South Street West, which is particularly pedestrian-friendly thanks to a strong entrepreneurial energy which hails from the neighborhood’s bars, restaurants, shops, cafes, and more besides.

Getting Around The Neighborhood

The bus routes stop on South Street and a little further into Graduate Hospital’s residential district. The most readily-available subway access is provided on the Broad Street Line at the Lombard-South stop. Residents in the area tend to have a preference for either walking or cycling. Easy access to Interstate 76 and 95 is provided via the nearby South Street Bridge.

Pub & Kitchen at 1946 Lombard Street which serves anything from Duck Rillette to razor clams is one among the favorite dining establishments. Pub & Kitchen is open seven days weekly from 4pm to 2am Monday to Friday, and 11am to 2am Saturdays and Sundays.

The Sidecar Bar & Grille located at 2201 Christian St is a two floor gastro pub pour with a large and revolving beer list. With its topnotch beer selection and hipster vibe this pub has become a mainstay in Graduate Hospital area for over 10years. In the warmer weather the sidewalk becomes transverse into a meet and greet with café tables and waitresses intertwining.

The Ten Stone is another great pub with an English flare is located at 2063 South St. Serving American pub grub this also boasts of a large revolving beer and tap list. Among the favorite food selections are the quesadillas and fish tacos. Sunday Brunch is also served and during warmer seasons outdoor seating.

Lazaro’s Pizzeria and Grill at 1743 South Street make it their specialty to produce over-sized pizza and cheesesteaks.

Things To Do In Graduate Hospital

Other than eating until your heart is content, or exploring the bars and enjoying the nightlife, what else is there to do in and around the Graduate Hospital neighborhood? The neighborhood is a thriving area for handmade arts and there are a number of thrift shops which do make for interesting experiences. South street West has become well lit and extremely pedestrian friendly here you will find a mix of coffee houses, pubs, boutiques and galleries. Like many other parts of the city Graduate Hospital is bike friendly with many bike paths weaving throughout its streets.
