Fairmount, the name of which is derived from the prominent hill where the Philadelphia Museum of Art is erected, is a neighborhood located within the North Philadelphia area. The neighborhood’s boundaries are Poplar Street to the north, Fairmount Avenue to the south, Corinthian and 19th Streets to the east, and the Schuylkill River to the west.

Fairmount is frequently referred to as the ‘Art Museum Area’ on account of its association with in addition to its proximity to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Getting Around Fairmount

The Broad Street rail line which is run by Southeastern Pennsylvania Transport Authority (SEPTA) stops at the eastern border of Fairmount. Additionally, a number of bus routes work between Center City and Fairmount, including numbers 7, 32, 33, and 48. Walking and biking are particularly common in the area, even more so along Fairmount Avenue. The nearest electric trolley service is at Girard Avenue which travels eastwards to Fishtown and Northern Liberties.

What to See and Do in Fairmount

The Philadelphia Museum of Art, which is among the very largest of art museums in the country with a collection of over 227,000 objects, makes for a very interesting outing, together with its newly built Perelman Annex.

The ‘Museum District’ is also well worthy of a visit where you’ll find Philadelphia’s Central Library, the Rodin Museum, the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Franklin Institute of Science, and the Barnes Foundation which many of Philadelphia’s lager outdoor events, including concerts, parades, and more, are held in the Benjamin Franklin Parkway due to its capacity for hosting very sizable crowds of people. The park itself is based on a similar concept to that of the Champs-Élysées in Paris.

Another main draw in the Fairmount neighborhood is the Eastern State Penitentiary. Built in 1829 but now abandoned, the Penitentiary still provides much interest during frequent organized tours. Furthermore, during the season for Halloween, the establishment is temporarily converted into a haunted house and, due to its resemblance to the Bastille in Paris, it also becomes a part of the Bastille Day celebrations in Philadelphia.
